Beyond the Lava
When a volcano erupts, the earth changes. When the lava stops, there is a dangerous new world to explore: another planet, a land of spectacular new craters, strange lakes of acid water and glaciers melting inside out. Now, in National Geographic's BEYOND THE LAVA, photographer Carsten Peter travels to a remote wilderness of eastern Russia called Kamchatka - a jagged peninsula about the size of California - that is home to an incredible 240 volcanoes, 29 of which are still active. Carsten's mission is to search beyond the lava, to scour unstable areas where volcanoes have erupted, and to photograph land so new it is not yet finished.
