Immigrants
For centuries, America has attracted and welcomed immigrants. The country has a history of great waves of immigration, with many millions leaving their homelands to flee economic and political hardships. Ellis Island in New York Harbor and Angel Island in San Francisco Bay are famous ports of entry that opened their doors to many immigrants. Historically, new legal immigrants often face continued hardships including poor housing conditions. Illegal immigrants also present a challenge to the nation, especially for states on the U.S. and Mexico border. Despite these challenges, immigrant labor and professionals help to support America's economy and help to enrich American society.
