Devils of the Deep
Local fishermen call them diablos rojos, or "red devils;" some fear them more than sharks. They are Humboldt, or Jumbo, squid, and in recent years, large populations have mysteriously appeared in the Gulf, and then just as mysteriously disappeared, for years at a time. Yet, despite its fearsome reputation, the Humboldt squid is a majestic and graceful creature with a kind of "alien presence" that can't help but evoke wonder. One scientist is on a mission to solve the mystery of the Humboldt squid's migrations.
