Since Sputnik, thousands of spacecraft have been placed in orbit around Earth. Many of these spacecraft are research or telecommunication satellites and space telescopes, such as the Hubble Space Telescope. The space around Earth is also permanently inhabited at the International Space Station, serviced by a fleet of space shuttles.
