World War II
When the millions of American soldiers returned from World War II, there were more veterans than jobs available. The U.S. Congress then created the G.I. Bill, which set aside billions of dollars for financial aide for veterans. This money was used for loans, tuition, and other expenses. Not only did it help the country avoid a huge unemployment crisis, but it was the first opportunity for many to achieve a top education. The bill has become permanent government policy, and is still in use today.
